Netgear security patch

Netgear discovered a password recovery and file access security vulnerability on some of its routers and modem routers.

Netgear strongly recommends that you download the latest firmware as soon as possible. Find the list of affected products here (click here). It also contains a guide to install the latest firmware.

You can find the model number at the back of your modem (or modem/router).

How to find and access your router in your (home)network

Windows operating system

Typ cmd in the left bottom corner next to the start button (Type here to search) and press enter

A Command Prompt window (looks very similar to the old DOS)

type: ipconfig and press enter

Now you get a whole series of numbers and adapters.

Connected via LAN straight into the modem

If you are connected via a LAN cable, you look for Ethernet adapter Ethernet

The Default Gateway of that adapter is the address of your modem/router. (please write this down)

Connected to Wifi

If you are connected to your Wifi, you look for Wireless LAN adapter Wi-fi

The Default Gateway of that adapter is the address of your modem/router. (please write this down)

Common IP addresses for modem/routers

We found a list of the most common and default local IP addresses of the default gateway (click here).

Mac

Click System Preferences

Click Network

You will see green lights next to the adapter you are connected to (Ethernet and/or Wifi). If you click one of those, you will find the IP address next to Router.

Access your modem/Router through a browser

Open your default internet browser (e.g. Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Edge, ...) and type the default gateway (or router) address in the address bar. Some browsers require you type HTTP:// (e.g. http://10.0.0.1).

This way you access the login screen.
