Electrical testing and tagging is a process in which electrical equipment is regularly inspected to ensure that it is safe to use. The equipment is tested for any signs of damage or wear, and then a tag with the date of the test and the initials of the technician is placed on it.
After the technician checks your item, you will notice that there is a label or stamp that has been placed on it. This is to indicate that the item has been tested and tagged.
The label or stamp will have the date of testing as well as the initials of the technician, but the first thing you will see is the test and tag colours.
The AS/NZS 3012 guidelines specified test tag colours. The different test and tag colours indicate the months of the year in which the item should be retested. Items that are used daily should be retested more frequently than items that are used less often. Here are the most common tag colours:
Red Tag
December, January, and February
Green Tag
March, April, and May
Blue Tag
June, July, and August
Yellow Tag
September, October, and November
As you can see, different test tag colours corresponds to a different month of the year. This is so you can easily keep track of when your items need to be retested.
That way, you can make sure that all of your electrical equipment is safe and up-to-date. Test and tagging is an important part of keeping yourself and others safe, so make sure to stay on top of it!
While Australian Standards, AS/NZS 30112 recommend a certain set of test and tag colours, you are free to use your own colour coding system as long as they are consistent and easy to understand.
Some particular industries prefer to use their company electrical tagging colours so that their items can easily be identified. Others may choose to use particular tag colours test for different types of equipment.
For example, you could use these special tag colour tests such as red for power tools, green for hand tools, and blue for electrical cords.
Whatever system you choose, make sure your colour coding system is easy to understand and follow. It all comes down to what you want to use for electrical tagging colours. That way, you can be sure that all of your equipment is properly tested and tagged.
